Scary Halloween

I did have a real scare for Halloween. Lately Elena has loved playing in the toilet just like any 14 month old. Sooooo we try to remember to leave the toilet lids closed and the bathroom doors shut. Unfortunately she got into them a couple times on Saturday. The first time I was sewing a baby blanket and Patrick was having a nap and Jesus was napping on our bed. She found the bathroom door open and the toilet lid up. She basically just pulled most of the toilet paper off the roll and put it into the toilet and played with it in the water. I went to find her when it was quiet and found her elbow deep in the toilet. I stripped her down and bathed her. After she was all dressed and clean, Jesus left to run some errands and I went back to sewing while she wandered around finding little things to play with. A few minutes later I heard her sort of yelp which usually means she can't pull something out of something else and she is frustrated. This yelp sounded a little different and I had a feeling something was wrong. After the yelp it got quiet and I decided to find her quickly. I didnt know where she was so I listened again and I heard the same little muffled yelp. I ran to the bathroom and found her head first in the toilet drowning. I pulled her out as quickly as I could and she was sopping and terrified. I held her and cried thinking about what I would have lost if I hadnt followed my instincts to find her. I bathed her again, this time she was very nervous of the water, but afterwards I held her for a long time and then she fell asleep. I am now constantly looking to check if the bathroom doors are shut because I am honestly terrified.

What is with these girls?! So glad she's okay! I'm constantly shutting bathroom doors, too, but my kids just like playing in the toilet water, not trying to swim in it. Emma puts EVERYTHING into her mouth, so I can't imagine what I would find, so we shut them & lock them when they figure out how to open the doors!

Thanks everyone, we are glad she is ok too. I think as long as we make sure the doors are closed we dont have to worry. I tell Patrick to make sure the bathroom doors are closed and so far so good.

That is so scary! Having one of my children drown is my #1 fear. It really is a terrifying thought. I'm so glad you found her quickly.

I am so glad that everything turned out ok. I would be terrified too. We are facing this same problem with Sadie. It's amazing how resilient kids are though.
